Bitcoin - The Currency of the Internet

A community dedicated to Bitcoin, the currency of the Internet. Bitcoin is a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. You might be interested in Bitcoin if you like cryptography, distributed peer-to-peer systems, or economics. A large percentage of Bitcoin enthusiasts are libertarians, though people of all political philosophies are welcome.

3 Things You Should Think About When Gambling with Bitcoin

submitted by Ranzware to BitNewsLive [link] [comments]

Tried gambling with bitcoin on Bodog but they wouldn’t give back my coins! Yet another place that is doing crypto wrong, and really I’m losing faith with anyone actually using crypto.

I wanted to try and see how bitcoin gambling works so signed up a fake person and deposited a tiny amount of money 0.0012 coins. Did some gambling in fiat (they convert it, you can’t gamble with actual bitcoins, which was immediately disappointing). I quadrupled my money betting on sports, so had about $40 in the account. I did a test withdrawal of $10 to see how that works, and they just froze my account.
I chatted with tech support, gave them all kinds of info, which i think was correct (I did make up a fake person) and then they asked me to call. I don’t really want to do that just to prove my identity, as that would kind of defeat the purpose of using this payment method, so they can keep my 0.0012 coins.
It seems to me that everything was alright while they had my money but giving it up was a little harder for them.
The whole point of crypto is to have some level of anonymity. I know money laundering and stuff, but they have a clause where you can only withdraw money you’ve actually already bet, which I did since I was just withdrawing winnings, so that can’t be the problem.
This is all quite disappointing because I want crypto to work and I want to use it in my life but I just keep losing money. I used Quadriga as my exchange and whatever I was using for trading is gone. (I did have coins in various other wallets so I didn’t lose all). Tried gambling with it. No go. Only thing i find it useful for is paying my VPN. And even that didn’t work for a couple of months as they were changing their payment processor. Can you imagine someone not taking a MasterCard for a month while they get a new card reader installed?
Getting fiat out of coins is also far far too onerous. Quadriga went under. In Canada, coinbase will only take fiat but not give it back. When I tried authenticating with kraken it somehow failed, required many emails to tech support and then I just gave up as it wasn’t worth it (I provided persona info which you have to do to for them to send fiat, it was stuck on “in progress”)
TL DR; this turned into a rant, but don’t give your coins to a major betting platform. They know how to take the coins but not how to give them back. This is, along with many other failures with crypto is making me want to just give up crypto altogether.

Gambling with bitcoin.

What are my options ? Not really looking to play a card game. Just looking for a 50/50. I know you can bet on the price going up or down but is that possible and safe if i already have some money on my wallet?
If so any other ways to gamble ? Just kinda scared some of these games would be rigged thats why.

thanks a lot.

Gambling with Bitcoin and Taxes

Last night I drunkenly won $5,000 on Bovada. I bought $100 worth of bitcoin through Coinbase, sent that bitcoin to Bovada, and this morning, $5100 worth of bitcoin is in my Coinbase account. And that brings us to present day.

I have scoured the web on this... but it seems absolutely no one knows how to report this on a tax return, even hypothetically. It's simple if you take Bitcoin out of it. I probably would have gotten a W-2G and reported it that way. If not, it would be up to me to report it myself, and the IRS could see the withdraw/deposit on my bank statement should I ever get audited.

But the anonymity of it all is throwing me for a loop. Bovada doesn't know who I am, or care, and also doesn't keep long term track of bet slips. So the official documentation consists of a bank withdrawl, a bit coin purchase, a bitcoin transfer, and then a bitcoin transfer back to be for a lot more than I had to begin with.

There is no way for me to "prove" I won that money through gambling. There is no way for me to quantify and prove the change in value of bitcoin between the time I bought it and the time I got my winnings.
Edit

My question would be how I should proceed here?

Is on-line gambling with Bitcoin legal in Canada

I wondering what the current situation is with Canadian gambling laws and legislation with respect to using Bitcoin, since it's not considered currency. Does anybody here have any experience using on-line casinos? And what are the most popular sites?

Starting with almost nothing, I made almost $500,000 gambling with Bitcoin. I then lost it all in about 60 seconds. I am now $50k in debt and will most likely lose my job, my visa status, my fiancee. AMA.

EDIT: 01/12/14
EDIT: Thank you all for taking the time to read this. The overwhelming majority of your responses have been very supportive, and I feel that I got a lot of perspective. I am in tears right now, because in my self-loathing state I really did not expect so much positive feedback. I need to come clean to my fiancee, because that is the one variable that I can control.
This is a story of luck, hope, greed, despair, stupidity. Over the past 10 days I have gone one a rollercoaster ride of the full spectrum of human emotion. I am trying to live down what happened, and maybe this AMA will help me. I feel this can work both ways too, and I am grateful for any advice I receive. Hopefully also it will help you!
I say that I hope my story will help you and I really mean that any of you, because let me start off by saying that I am not a gambler, and I have never even exhibited gambling tendencies before. I am a risktaker and I enjoy new experiences, but I have always considered myself responsible and I have a sound understanding of the maths behind gambling. I know that the house always wins. But after what happened to me, how quickly I got sucked in, how much money I made, and how it all ended just days later, I honestly do not feel that I was fully in control of my actions. If it happened to me, it can happen to you too, and I sincerely hope that after reading this, it never will.
Let me give some more specific details, so that you have a more complete picture. I will fill in the rest in response to your questions.
EDIT: I ran out of space for proof, please see comments.
So this is pretty much my story. I meant for this to be short, but I now I'm almost at the word limit. I hope there is still room for questions!
I realize that there are a lot of people who will say that I had it coming, and I fully accept that. The truth is that I am a bad person, and it was not even some conflict of good and bad, this was just all bad. I lose as a human being, and I deserve nothing but the worst of what life has to offer me in the future. And if I sound incongruently cheerful, it's probably because the gravity of the situation has not fully sunk in yet. Trust me, I am not cheerful. I have literally lost everything, I am suicidal, and there is literally no silver lining here. So please reserve your judgment; I will be judged to the fullest extent over however long a time I have left to live.
Gambling details:
1 Some of the names and places may be fictitious.
2 I was never a gambler, but I do have a degree in math: there's around a 90% chance that you will top up by 10% if you combine basic strategy with martingale. The inherent variance, 3/2 payouts and doubling makes the whole process very confusing to an untrained eye, and it's not that obvious that you are using a cheap and flawed betting system. Scraping a small profit is very easy and fun. I guess I just wanted to impress my fiancee and her friends.
3 The bad beats with Blackjack were mainly due to variance. The problem with Blackjack is that the house edge is calculated by considering a large number of hands with the same starting bet. But with martingales, getting a 3/2 payout is more beneficial with higher bets; likewise having to split/double is good with higher bets, but not good if you're up against the max bet. So the luck further compounded by variance of the bet amount with respect to the starting hand. In roulette the house edge is worse, the but game is a lot more homogeneous.
4 I gave bitZino about 6 months of their earnings from last year in just under one minute: http://arstechnica.com/business/2013/01/bitcoin-based-casino-rakes-in-over-500000-profit-in-six-months/
5 The probability of a run of 7 black is just under 1%, which is a number that we can relate to, it's 1 in 100. Pretty unlikely. If your luck sucks you might hit it a few times. The probability of 10 blacks is just under 0.1%. So if you hit one of the above, then only count is 1 in 10 times. Your luck has got to really suck to hit that more than once. The probability of an initial run of 12 black is around 0.02%, which is just ridiculously low. The probability of 20 black is about 0.0001% which is astronomically low. Disregarding the 2 reds, since I hit the max limit, so not really a fair account, but still. This is almost impossible.

Why gamble with Bitcoin?

As you know Bitcoin is now a major force in the real world.
It might not be anywhere near its true potential but people are now beginning to realise that it is here to stay and the only thing missing is placing a true value on it rather than it being a trading tool which is tantamount to gambling virtual funds.
Gambling in a casino with Bitcoin in many ways is far more enjoyable and less volatile which is why BtcVegas.io is in existence.
Private and confidential gaming at a casino that can be trusted.
Great member benefits and huge bonuses to ensure you continue enjoying the thrill of playing lots of exciting games.

I have lost $60,000 gambling with Bitcoin. I have failed my family. Considering suicide.

Hi everyone,
I am 36 year old married man with 2 kids aged 6 and 4. I recently discovered Bitcoin during the the big spike that was on the news. I bought them when they were around $200 each and I was extremely disappointed when they went down to around $100.
I wanted to find a way to get more value for the coins I had bought and recover the loss in value. Then I discovered Satoshi Dice. I found you could gamble with your Bitcoins and double your money.
Well, I started playing a bit - won around $5,000 worth of Bitcoins, and then lost about $20,000 worth. I was so ashamed of my loss that I dug into my home mortgage fund and gambled $40,000 away. Within 1 week it was all gone.
My wife does not know at this point. She will probably find out when the letters from the bank start coming. I have no other savings. I have let down my family and myself. At this point, I am considering slitting my wrists. My kids are the only thing keeping me alive at this point.

Question: Is gambling with Bitcoin online, or any cryptocurrency for that matter, illegal?

I know the federal government prohibits online gambling, but Bitcoin is unregulated so how could it be against the law? Is this still a grey area for the government?

[Hiring] Social media manager; Casino reviewer; content writers (topic: Gambling with bitcoin on android devices)

Hiya people
I am currently in the process of setting up a new website which will basically have reviews, news etc relating to all things gambling with bitcoin on android devices.
It will be a completely trustworthy site, all services reviewed will be continuously vetted to prevent user scams. I want to offer a service to people like me who just wanted an easy to navigate resource for all the android compatible services.
I am going all out on the site, and i need to hire some people as the work load is getting too much for me.
You must have a thorough understanding of android operating system (on a user level), bitcoin (no technical skills required but broad understanding), and have a passion for gambling so that you can relate to the users.
Basically i need some people to do a few jobs:
  1. Social media manager - Post news articles on twitter, facebook/google+(same content goes to these two), and to our subreddit. Looking at at least 1 post per social avenue per day. They can often be the same content. I will pay per post in bitcoin.
  2. Casino reviewer - Somebody who will get paid in bitcoin, to review a casino. They will be required to do a write-up following my review template. You will be required to take several videos ingame on your phone. You will also need to take several photos and then put it all together. I will pay per review in bitcoin. You also get to keep the bitcoin provided to review the site and all winnings.
  3. Content writer - Writing 250-1000 word articles based around a topic ie The advantages/disadvantages of bitcoin gambling on iphone vs android. You will be paid in bitcoin based on wordcount. All content must be 100% hand written, no copy pasting, no spinning.
Ideally at this stage i would like to take on somebody to do the social media stuff, and then as work comes you can take on as much/little reviewing/content writing as you would like. If you hang around, and become a part of the crew i can take you on as permanent team and you will earn a percentage of site revenue.
If you are interested please email me at [email protected] with a brief rundown of your skills and why you think you would be ideal for me to pick.
I really want somebody that has the intent to hang around for a while, i already have some staff and I treat them well!
So shoot me an email if this sounds like something you would like to do =)
Matt
